Seo Is Dead Really?!

SEO Is Dead – Really?!

I lose count of how often I stumble across articles online or in magazines that claim SEO is dead. These articles seem to resurface out of the woodwork whenever Google or another search engine release an algorithm update to vet out any websites or SEO techniques that are deemed suspicious. As a result, this appears to send a surge of bloggers into a frenzy, claiming that SEO is no more.

I suppose it depends on what we define as “SEO”. SEO stands for Search Engine Optimisation, but what does this actually mean? For someone who uses suspicious SEO techniques, which are then penalized by a search engine, the claim that “SEO is Dead” may then apply to their techniques. They may have relied heavily on suspicious, low quality links and crammed their website and their copy full of keywords. Such techniques have become increasingly risky to resort to as a means of improving SEO. But just because a search engine changes or improves upon the way in which it ranks websites (which is often a good thing, with an intent to improve the quality of results), this doesn’t mean that SEO as an entirety is dead. It just means that certain techniques for improving SEO may need to be reconsidered, or excluded entirely from the many techniques and efforts, which influence the rankings.

This therefore should not be seen as the end of an era, but rather a call to be pro-active, to adapt, to move forward in the field of SEO. SEO is not dead, but SEO does change and evolve. And boy does it do so often! I’ve been heavily involved in the field of SEO for many years now, and I find myself having to learn, relearn, change and adapt my understanding of SEO on a monthly, sometimes weekly basis. There are so many factors that influence how a search engine understands and ranks a website, that it’s important to stay on top of these and to continually research which techniques are most effective.

Search engines will always need to base their rankings on an algorithm, which is made up of various indicators. These may change and adapt, with certain indicators being added or ignored over time, but search engines will always need a model in which to base their rankings on. An SEO expert should always be seeking to move with these changes, and to shape their techniques and efforts around what search engines favour. Provided they do this, SEO will never die.
